This is something I have said a number of times now but it is still not enough to express the magic that happens during this time of the year. Kolkata transforms itself to welcome the great goddess and even the air carries a special buzz of energy or rather anticipation. Truly one of the best times that one should be visiting the city (well the jams and blockages aside). Among all that is going around (twinkling of bright fairy lights at every nook, the pandals in their different stages of creation, the sweet smell in the air, the slight change in the weather…) getting to sample the new Puja Special Menu at Bon Appetit was the cherry on top…hmm or in this case the rose petal on top?!?

Bon Appetit is one of my (and my parents) favorite evening snacks joint. The paneer kostho pizza that was introduced last pujas was amazing and something that I wish they had made a part of their regular menu. Keeping the idea of mixing traditional Bengali flavors with world cuisine this time around Rahul teemed some classic Bengali flavors with some Mexican staples. But before I get on to that let me first talk about what I feel are the stars of the menu…the desserts! This time around you can take your pick from Rose & Pistachio Cupcake, Mini Paan Mousse and Asche Bocchor Abar Hobe. Picture this…a subtle rose flavored cupcake with a gulkand pistachio center topped with cream mixed with pistachio and a hint of elaichi (cardomom) to it and finished off with a rose petal 😀 Tickles you imagination on so many levels doesn’t it?

Or a paan flavored mousse which has supari blended into it topped off with a mini paan. With the first taste the flavors just explode into your mouth and you feel as if you are actually chewing on one! The maru in me was very happy with it somehow even though I usually dislike paan 😛 And it doesn’t get better than digging into a sundae made with vanilla ice cream and chocolate covered kheerkodom and naaru (coconut). Kheerkodom is one of my favorite Bengali sweets and I can best describe it as a dense rasagulla with a oozy sweet syrup center. One bite and you are transported to heaven! I don’t like coconut at all but this one was really nice especially coated with the dark chocolate. Ahhh!!!

Coming to the savory part of the menu…the Egg & Chili Nachos were really good! Who thought that a sunny side up egg paired with nachos could be so satisfying. My other favorite is the Spicy Paneer Quesadilla and mom enjoyed the Corn Salsa Burrito. There is a treat in store for the non veg lovers too and you can check out Poorna’s blog (Presented by P) or Dolon’s (Pout Pretty) to see what they have to say about the non veg selection. The special menu is available from the 12th of October all the way to 26th October (their longest running puja menu yet due to popular demand). They even provide home delivery so if you are not keen on braving the puja traffic just ring them up. See ya!
