My parents were avid travelers for a good part of their lives. Not a vacation went by where we would be sitting at home twiddling our thumbs! Plans were made well in advance and the tickets pre-booked. Mum would start packing the bags a week before and the moment the school vacation would start that we would set off on our adventure. Some of my fondest childhood memories consist of these times – traveling by train, going up winding roads, roaming the streets of a new city and munching on different kinds of food. Dad would be armed with his maps and guides ensuring a smooth and hassle free trip for his family while my mother would be manning the luggage especially the food basket. She would ensure that snacks and water were always at hand as a “just in case” kind of precaution.

I remember a time when we would be travelling with over 10 pieces of luggage filled with everything but the kitchen sink! To my utter embarrassment, the pieces kept on increasing proportionately to the number of family members.  Now when I think about it I realize that my parents had ensured that they could handle any eventuality that could possibly occur. They didn’t have the luxury of the world wide web back in the day and everything was done on a trail and error basis. 20+ years hence as I pursue my thirst for travel, I’m probably the same age as my parents were from my earliest memories. But unlike them I can access a whole world of information with a mere swipe of my finger!

I don’t even need to lug around my bulky laptop with me…all I need is my smartphone. In a time where there is an app for everything and everything has an app, navigating through this world has never been easier. From the very basic booking of tickets, hotels, cabs, services, GPS locator to specialized ones like a voice based translation app or travel guides. Can you even begin to imagine what the future will hold? What kind of flexibility and comfort an app powered environment can offer? How about say you have booked a table at a restaurant…we all know that some places can make you wait for your food for eons and when you are abroad every moment counts. Imagine an app that not only allowed you to book the table but also lets you select your meals and drinks. The restaurant could get your order in advance along with your estimated time of arrival based on GPS and make preparations accordingly. Your meal would be ready for you when you arrive!

I think one of the biggest fears any traveler has is loosing their luggage. Especially for business travelers who are hard pressed for time going shopping to replace everything in a short time could mean a big hassle! But they can now log on to a shopping site like Myntra from their smartphone and easily get what they need. Not only do they get access to a wide range of brands and product choices but with a quick and efficient delivery service they can get their purchases pronto without any worries! Not only that gifts can be sent to loved ones for their special occasions and one does not have to miss out at all irrespective how far they are.

Lot of times one ends up missing special events and attractions in a city. Imagine an app that takes your GPS position in account and shows the events around your position along with the start times, price and booking options. You would never have to miss out on any cultural activity that a place would have to offer! The possibilities are endless…like it is said one is only limited by their imagination. I still have many miles to cover in this journey that my parents introduced me to. Places to see and things to experience! As a single woman traveler I cant wait to see what doors this digitally enabled world will open for me and how it will help to enhance the overall experience. What kind of app do you wish you had with you while travelling? I look forward to hearing your ideas 🙂  I will see you soon….Happy Journey!
