The Yellow Straw Kolkata
When I was doing my MBA in Poona, it was a part of our evening routine to head on down to the juice center near our hostel and chill with our glasses of juice along with fruit salad after a long hot day. Poona was damn hot during those months and the only thing that bought a semblance of relief was either hiding in the computer room pretending to work on the terminals (even though we had our laptops all the time with us) so that we got to stay in an air-conditioned room for a bit or guzzling down glasses of cold juice to cool ourselves. You get the most awesome fruits in that city and it was the first place where I saw the fig fruit 🙂 Since I came back to Kolkata that little activity has long become a thing of the past as I didn’t find a good juice place close to house and out here (at least back then) juice house would have very limited options aka orange, pineapple, apple and grapes.
I recently heard about a place called The Yellow Straw and when I looked it up at Zomato I came across a very interesting menu with some unique juice blends the likes of which I have not come across till date. A bunch of us were invited to sample their offerings by the owners of the place who in a span of 13 months have opened 5 outlets across the city which is quite an admirable achievement. They have plans of opening more soon and you just might find them next in your favorite mall or maybe even your neighborhood. As I stepped into the RN Mukherjee outlet the first thing that I noticed was the colors. The place looks bright and warm which feels very soothing in a way. As you make your way to the top to the seating area you begin to notice the little details that have gone into the place…from the printed table tops to the assortment of games available making it the perfect “chillax” (combo of chill and relax as we used to say back in the day) zone.

Like I mentioned before I found some interesting items in the menu and I was hooked on trying Chilli Pataka from the get go. The combination of pineapple, kiwi and green chilly had my taste buds tingling from expectation and it was the first thing that I tried. The flavor of the fruits wraps around your tongue and the green chilly hits you in the throat. A dash of rock salt makes it a very interesting refresher. They offer you choices that you can add into your juice aka to make it with/without sugar/salt, etc. Some of the items that I really liked from their menu were the Corn & Spinach Snackies (quick bites made with topping on Monacco biscuits), Mango Mint Cooler (part of their Mango festival), Mango Sundae (an absolute decadent delight!), Musk Melon Juice, Cheese Chilli Toasties and Refresher Straw (interesting combo of Watermelon, Carrot and Grapes).

The juices are made fresh and don’t have anything added in them unless you specifically ask for it. Not only do you get a large serving of fruits but a tall glass of it makes you feel full and sated for a long time. I haven’t even mentioned the best part yet which has to be the price that they are being offered on – fusion juices range from Rs. 60-100/- whereas the snacks range from Rs. 35-70/-. They even have combo offers on their menu where you can get drinks/food combos at very reasonable prices. Whether you are a college kid or an office go-er The Yellow Straw has something to satisfy your munchies and budget. I’m really looking forward to them opening a branch in South Kolkata soon. Have you tried them before? What is your favorite from their menu? Well that’s a wrap from me…I will see you around…Peace out!
